True Client Experience: Management Mobsters

A client of mine is a resident at an apartment complex in Chandler, Arizona. For the purposes of this article, we will call her Megan.

Now Megan is a sweet woman in her 50s who is as kind as the days are long. So when she signed up for PrePaid Legal Services, I knew that her kindness would never be mistaken for weakness by others again.
Just one week into her membership, Megan called me, excited to explain how she had already gotten ten times her money's worth from the services: Megan received a letter from the management mobsters at her apartment home stating that bedbugs had found their way to Arizona, and that if any residents' homes were spotted having bedbugs, then the resident was fully responsible (financially and all!) for getting rid of the bugs within 48 hours, or they would face eviction. These management mobsters, not knowing that one of their residents not only knew her rights, but had 24/7 access to her attorney, stated that each resident had to sign and return the notice within 5 business days in order to avoid action.

Megan took one look at the letter and called her attorney. Not only did management apologize profusely and tell her to forget about the letter completely, they offered her $50 off of her monthly rent for her upcoming lease renewal.

...Did I mention that this is an entirely true story?

'Tis the Season to be Careful

Opening the Safe

Imagine for a moment that I give you a safe containing $50 million dollars. I say to you that it's yours -- and rest assured, it is. However, you quickly realize that there is absolutely no way to get into the safe without the combination. But I haven't given you the combination-- that isn't my problem. You see, I said that the money was yours; I never promised to help you access it. 

Consider your rights as the riches inside of that safe. As an American, you are entitled to a certain set of rights. But having rights is not the same as having access to rights. I assure you, you don't want to wait until you need them to realize that you don't have access.
